'Lemonade' Picks Up Four Emmy Nominations

Klaudia//July 15, 2016
The 2016 Emmy Awards nominations are in, and for the 16th straight year, HBO is the top-nominated network with a total of 94 nods. And while a few music-related entities are among the potential honorees -- Taraji P. Henson's Cookie Lyon character from Fox hit Empire was one; Broadway star Audra McDonald as Billie Holliday in HBO film Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill another -- Beyonce's HBO special/"visual album" Lemonade was shut out of the major categories.

Lemonade was, however, nominated four times. First, in the category Outstanding Production Design For A Variety, Nonfiction, Event Or Award Special; Hannah Beachler (Production Designer), Chris Britt (Art Director) and Kim Murphy (Set Decorator) are the people who stand to receive the award if the special wins against designers for Grease: Live, He Named Me Malala, the Oscars broadcast and The Wiz Live.

Second, Beyonce herself, alongside director Kahlil Joseph, are nominated in the Outstanding Directing For A Variety Special category. The duo are up against Grease: Live, the Grammy Awards broadcast, the Kennedy Center Honors broadcast and live specials from Adele and Amy Schumer. Third, editor Bill Yukich is up for Outstanding Picture Editing For Variety Programming, against episodes of Drunk History, Conan, Key & Peele and Last Week Tonight with Jon Oliver.

And finally, Lemonade as a whole has been nominated in the Outstanding Variety Special category, up against Adele Live In New York City, Amy Schumer: Live At The Apollo, The Kennedy Center Honors and The Late Late Show Carpool Karaoke Prime Time Special. The two nominations (for directing and for the special as a whole) bring Beyonce's total number of nominations to four through the years; previously she was nominated in 2013 for her Super Bowl Halftime Show performance, and again in 2015 for her On The Run tour documentary alongside husband Jay Z.

'Formation' Wins Grand Prix at Cannes Lions Awards

Klaudia//June 25, 2016
Beyonce can now add the Cannes Lions’ most prestigious honor to her awards shelf: her music video for “Formation,” surprise-released in February, took home one of two Grand Prix Lion Awards at the inaugural Cannes Lions Entertainment for Music, awarded Friday night (June 24.)

“Formation” was the top winner in the highly competitive Excellence In Music Video category, which shortlisted 13 music videos on Thursday and awarded eight with prizes on Friday. Other honorees included Silver Lion winners “Voodoo In My Blood,” by Massive Attack feat. Young Fathers; “Luminous Freedom” by New Build and “Blackstar” by David Bowie; as well as Bronze Lion winners “Hello” by Adele; “Runnin” by Naughty Boy featuring Beyonce & Arrow Benjamin and “Wide Open” by the Chemical Brothers featuring Beck.

Beyonce isn’t the only member of the Carter family with a Cannes Lions Grand Prix under their belt: in 2011, Jay Z took home two -- from the Integrated and Outdoor Lions -- for Droga5 and Bing’s “Decoded” campaign, which hid all 320 pages of Jay Z’s autobiography in 13 cities across the globe.

Though “Formation” doesn’t represent the typical Grand Prix-winning campaign in that no corporate brand was attached, Grey Group’s evp-director of music Josh Rabinowitz, jury president of Lions Entertainment for Music, argued that the video’s re-positioning of Beyonce’s personal brand was just as powerful. “ the biggest artist on the planet taking serious risks,” Rabinowitz said in a press conference earlier in the day, announcing the winners. “This is a mainstream pop artist pushing the limits on the way we perceive things of race in culture, and the perception of women in culture.”

HBO to Submit ‘Lemonade’ for Emmy Consideration

Klaudia//April 27, 2016
Beyoncé’s “Lemonade” has left the world abuzz since HBO debuted the visual album for a 27-hour window Saturday night. For those who missed it, it’s available for purchase via iTunes, or streaming via Jay Z’s Tidal platform. But the television drop makes it eligible for Emmy consideration, and HBO plans to submit “Lemonade” in the variety special category, Variety has learned.

Whether Kahlil Joseph and Beyoncé herself, the credited directors of the piece, can be joined by “additional directors” Melina Matsoukas, Todd Tourso, Dikayl Rimmasch, Jonas Akerlund and Mark Romanek remains to be seen. HBO is in the midst of working out those details.

In 2015, the Emmy for outstanding variety special went to NBC’s “Saturday Night Live 40th Anniversary Special,” which edged out, among other nominees, “The Kennedy Center Honors” on CBS.

Meanwhile, “Lemonade” should be a shoo-in for consideration in the lighting design/lighting direction category, given the lush imagery from vignette to vignette. The frames conjured by the seven d.p.s credited on the film have drawn comparisons to the work of Terrence Malick, and the project does have one definitive connection to the reclusive director: Joseph shot behind-the-scenes footage for Malick’s 2013 film “To the Wonder.”

Beyoncé previously received two Emmy nominations, for her Super Bowl XLVII Halftime Show in 2013 and for the “On the Run Tour” concert special with Jay Z.
