On The Run II Tour European Leg Grosses $87.6M

July 31, 2018

With the combined star power of Beyoncé and Jay-Z, it comes as no surprise that the first leg of the couple’s “OTR II Tour” was a wild success. Pollstar’s Boxoffice has received reports for the entire 18-night European excursion – and every single show sold out.

Presented by Live Nation Global Touring in association with Beyoncé’s Parkwood Entertainment and Jay-Z’s Roc Nation, the stadium outing kicked off June 6 at Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales. That gig sold 39,731 tickets and grossed nearly $4.2 million (£3.1 million).

The European run racked up a total of 871,012 tickets sold and grossed more than $87.6 million. The average show sold 58,067 tickets and grossed more than $5.8 million, with tickets ranging in price from as low as €10 ($11.69) in Rome and Milan, Italy, to as high as €175 ($204.44) in Barcelona. The average ticket price was $100.57, which would seem a bargain to catch two of the biggest artists around.

The biggest stop of the European leg was the two-night stand at London Stadium, which sold a total of 126,443 tickets and grossed nearly $11.2 million. The London show also happened to be the location for the couple announcing the surprise release of their collaborative Everything Is Love album. The other cities that were treated to two nights of The Carters were Paris and Amsterdam.

Beyoncé Given Unprecedented Control Over Vogue's September Cover

July 31, 2018

Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour gave Beyoncé unprecedented control over the cover of the upcoming September issue, sources say, and the music icon hired the first black photographer to shoot a cover in the publication’s 126-year history.

The publication is contractually obligated to give Beyoncé full control over the cover, the photos of her inside the magazine and the captions, which she has written herself and are in long-form, according to two sources who are familiar with the agreement between Vogue and Beyoncé but aren’t authorized to speak to the press.

Wintour has always exerted complete control over the fashion bible, including selecting the outfits worn by cover models. Cover subjects are usually given little to no say in their photos and are sent the cover in the week ahead of publication, a source familiar with the editorial process at the publication told HuffPost.

Beyoncé chose Tyler Mitchell, 23, to be her photographer.

“I depict black people and people of color in a really real and pure way,” Mitchell, who has already made a splash by shooting campaigns for Marc Jacobs and Givenchy, told The New York Times in December. “There is an honest gaze to my photos.”

Beyonce's Director, Choreographers & More Talk 'Single Ladies'

July 29, 2018

This week, Billboard is celebrating the music video with a week's worth of content that looks at the past, present and future of the video, at a time when it seems to be as relevant as ever. Here, we flashback ten years for an extended look at how arguably the most legendary video from the 21st century's greatest music video star came together, and why its legacy endures a decade later.

On the St. Louis stop of the 2016 Formation World Tour, Beyoncé and her dancers -- including her dance captain, Ashley Everett -- were just about to wave their hands through the final bars of “Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)” when the pop star paused. The buoyant bass continued to blast as she vamped, coyly pacing the stage before she turned on her heel and signaled for a gentleman in a white jacket to join her. John Silver, Everett’s boyfriend, trotted into the spotlight and took the floor, where he presented his dumbstruck love with an engagement ring -- one that got an all-too-appropriate cameo during a sequence as familiar to the crowd as the “Single Ladies” chorus itself. If you like it, then you shoulda put a ring on it: he did, so he did, and Everett flicked her wrist and flashed her newly-minted diamond in the routine she helped create.

That such a life-changing moment went down in the middle of a “Single Ladies” performance is perfect, as the song has proven to be a monumentally transformative force in the lives of Beyoncé and those of her closest collaborators. Everett was at Beyoncé’s side when she filmed the music video for “Single Ladies” and in the three months leading up to the shoot, when they and choreographers Frank Gatson Jr. and JaQuel Knight worked tirelessly to hone every kick, waist-wind, and lift that would go on to define one of the most iconic dances in pop music history.

Last week, Beyoncé hopped onto the remix of J Balvin’s ubiquitous banger “Mi Gente,” no doubt breaking the internet in the process. Even better than her admirable accent was the fact that the collaboration is a benefit for disaster relief organizations in Mexico and the Caribbean.

Truth be told, this was far from Beyoncé’s first en español moment. It’s clear that Queen B understands the value of the Spanish-language market — but that doesn’t mean she can roll her r’s perfectly just yet. Enter Jean Rodríguez, the Puerto Rican vocal producer who worked with Bey on the “Mi Gente” redux.

Rodríguez is a pro at coaching stars who want to try their hand at bilingual tracks. The Puerto Rican vocal producer (who’s also part of the duo COASTCITY and just so happens to be Luis Fonsi’s brother) battled with Trey Songz about working harder on his accent for the Spanish version of “Can’t Help But Wait,” an insistence that Rodríguez says led to “friction” in the studio. (You be the judge on how Songz’s linguistic experimentation wound up.) He’s aided Juanes, Alejandro Sanz, and Prince Royce on English-language tracks, and is no stranger to hip-hop, reggaeton, and other urbano genres. When Wisin & Yandel wanted an English hook for their EDM flex “Algo Que Me Gusta De Ti” with T-Pain and Chris Brown, Rodríguez was there.

His studio time with B took place in The Hamptons, where she and Jay-Z have recently been making some real estate moves. Rodríguez had little time to prepare for his royal appointment; he didn’t know which star he’d be coaching on the “Mi Gente” remix until the day of the session. Read more...
On Thursday evening, Beyonce shared a 20 second video on Instagram announcing she had joined a remix of J Balvin and Willy William's hit "Mi Gente" and would donate all her proceeds to disaster relief charities for Puerto Rico, Mexico and the other recently affected Caribbean islands.

Following in the footsteps of Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee's record-breaking success with the Justin Bieber-featuring "Despacito" remix, Beyonce's good news with a good cause marked a big moment for Latin music in the mainstream. With Queen Bey singing in both Spanish and English on the track, it and its star-studded music video racked up millions of streams in its first 24 hours, topping iTunes' sales charts in 30 countries and YouTube's trend ranking, and looks prime to hit the Hot 100 top 10.

Here's how the collaboration came to be:

A remake of an original song by French DJ Willy Williams, "Mi Gente" had the makings of a global hit when it was first released in April and immediately sparked talk of a general market remix. "But we wanted it to live for a while and get as big as it could on a global scale in Spanish," says Rebeca Leon, who co-manages Balvin with Balvin's label, Universal Music Latin Entertainment (UMLE).

The "lofty goal," says UMLE president Victor Gonzalez, "was to make it No. 1 on Spotify at a global level." Read more...
Beyoncé is fundraising for hurricane victims in the Caribbean in the most Beyoncé way ever: by dropping a surprise song.

The singer released a new remix Thursday to the reggaeton hit “Mi Gente” by Willy Williams and J Balvin. The remixed single features Beyoncé spitting a little bit of Spanish and dropping in a whole verse.

“I am donating my proceeds from this song to hurricane relief charities for Puerto Rico, Mexico and the other affected Caribbean islands,” she wrote.

She also linked back to the hurricane relief page of her website, which includes various ways people can donate to victims of hurricanes Irma and Maria.

While the actresses in 2001's cult hit Josie and the Pussycats only sang backing vocals for Letters to Cleo singer Kay Hanley, filmmakers apparently had a number of notable musicians audition for the film -- including Beyoncé Knowles, who would later become one of the biggest stars on the planet.

The revelation came as part of an interview with Billboard, who were speaking with directors Harry Elfont and Deborah Kaplan as well as star Rachael Leigh Cook and Hanley ahead of a concert Tuesday night in Los Angeles in which Hanley played songs from the Josie and the Pussycats soundtrack for the first time live.

“The list of people who auditioned to be in the movie. The fact that Beyoncé, Lisa 'Left Eye' Lopes and Aaliyah came in to audition was crazy,” Elfont said. “I think it was 2000. We read Left Eye twice. She really wanted to play the part. Beyoncé was really quiet and shy. Who knew? It was a comedy and Aaliyah was more serious and thoughtful. We wanted someone who could really play the comedy.”

When the film was in production, Beyoncé would have been well-known as a part of Destiny's Child but wasn't the global phenom that she would later become.

Had she won the role of Valerie Brown -- eventually played in the film by Rosario Dawson -- the band's meteoric rise in the film would likely have turned into a metaphor for Beyoncé herself in the years following the film's release and subsequent box office failure. Read more...
Beyoncé’s first concert after childbirth might not be coming as soon as some had hoped.

A rep for the singer denied an Us Weekly report from earlier Thursday that claimed Beyoncé and her rapper husband, JAY-Z, would team up for a benefit concert in New York in support of those affected by Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma.

The report had stated the concert would take place on Oct. 17 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

A spokesperson for JAY-Z's streaming service Tidal, meanwhile, said nothing has been announced about its annual benefit show.

"TIDAL will be hosting our annual benefit concert with details to soon follow," the rep said. "We have not announced or confirmed any line up or partner organizations, but stay tuned."
