'Savage' Surges to No. 1 on Billboard Hot 100

Klaudia//May 26, 2020
Megan Thee Stallion's "Savage," featuring Beyoncé, bounds from No. 5 to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart. The track, which previously reached a No. 2 high after the arrival of its Beyoncé remix, becomes Megan Thee Stallion's first Hot 100 leader and Beyoncé's seventh.

"Savage," released on 1501 Certified/300 Entertainment, is the 1,102nd No. 1 in the Hot 100's 61-year history.

Here's a deeper look at the song's Hot 100 coronation.

No. 1 in sales: "Savage" concurrently climbs 4-1 on the Digital Song Sales chart, up 55% to 30,000 downloads sold in the week ending May 21, according to Nielsen Music/MRC Data, good for the Hot 100's top Sales Gainer award.

The song was on sale in a variety of physical/digital combination offerings during the tracking week, including autographed CD and vinyl copies put up for purchase in Megan Thee Stallion's webstore beginning May 15. Consumers could purchase CD and vinyl singles, each with a digital download; the download would be sent to consumers upon purchase, with physical versions due to arrive at a later date.

Megan Thee Stallion earns her first Digital Song Sales No. 1, while Beyoncé adds her eighth (the eighth-best total in the chart's archives).

Beyoncé Ties No. 1 Record as 'Savage' Tops R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay Chart

Klaudia//May 21, 2020
Megan Thee Stallion locks up the No. 1 spot on Billboard’s R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart as “Savage,” featuring Beyoncé, rises from the runner-up rank on the list dated May 23. The duo takes over thanks to a 5 percent boost to 27.3 million in audience in the week ending May 17, according to Nielsen Music/MRC Data.

With their ascent, the Houston natives return female artists to the chart summit for the first time in nearly a year. The last woman at No. 1 was Cardi B, who posted the last of 20 straight weeks in charge through “Money” (nine weeks) and then “Please Me,” (11) a collaboration with Bruno Mars, on the June 15, 2019, list.

“Savage” gives Megan Thee Stallion her first leader on the chart, after a trio of prior top five showings. Her debut hit, “Big Ole Freak,” reached No. 5 in May 2019, while two later hits both went to No. 3: “Cash S--t,” featuring DaBaby last September, and “Hot Girl Summer,” a collaboration with Nicki Minaj and Ty Dolla $ign, in November.

Beyoncé nabs her eighth visit to the penthouse to tie Alicia Keys for the most No. 1s among women since the chart began in 1993. The superstar also ends a five-year drought from the summit, having last topped R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay with “7/11” in February 2015. Between the two chart champs, Bey logged eight other entries, with six entering the top 10. Lemonade single “Sorry” was the most successful, climbing to No. 3 in July 2016.

Time Chooses Beyoncé as 2014 Woman of the Year

Klaudia//March 7, 2020
Time magazine has chosen 100 "Women of the Year," selecting one trailblazing woman to represent each year from 1920 to 2019. It's a distinctive way to celebrate Women's History Month, but it's also an acknowledgement that for many years, women's contributions were systematically overlooked.

For 72 years, Time's most anticipated cover was called "Man of the Year" — until 1999, when the magazine changed the title to "Person of the Year."

Still, the male trend continued, and most of the people chosen for "Person of the Year" have been, in fact, men. So, as a reparation of sorts, Time is honoring 100 women now — from suffragists to Beyoncé, and many in between.

Jay-Z explains sitting during National Anthem at Super Bowl LIV

Klaudia//February 6, 2020
Jay-Z has a message for all those who believed he and his wife Beyoncé were engaging in a silent protest at this year's Super Bowl: "It actually wasn't. Sorry."

The couple received some criticism after TMZ posted video showing them and their 8-year-old daughter Blue Ivy sitting while Demi Lovato performed "The Star-Spangled Banner" at Super Bowl LIV.

On Tuesday TMZ posted video of Jay-Z addressing what happened during an appearance at Columbia University in New York City.

According to the mogul, the whole thing "was not premeditated at all," but was instead a case of him doing his job given that his Roc Nation corporation has a partnership with the NFL which includes producing the Super Bowl halftime show and other major performances.

He said his wife, who was a featured performer at the Super Bowl in 2013 and 2016, was offering him some insight about the experience and they were seated from the time Yolanda Adams sang "America the Beautiful" before Lovato sang the National Anthem.

Beyoncé releases statement about signing with Sony/ATV

Klaudia//January 22, 2020
Beyoncé and Sony/ATV Music Publishing have signed a global agreement covering her entire song catalog.

The deal includes hits from Destiny’s Child, through to her collection of solo works written throughout her career.

The agreement with the publishing company reunites the artist with long-term ally Jon Platt, who joined Sony/ATV as Chairman and CEO last year.

“I am excited for what’s to come with my continued partnership with Jon Platt in his new leadership role at Sony/ATV,” said Beyoncé.

“Jon’s the executive who understands the creative mindset and continues to be both an advocate and protector. It has been an honor working with Jon from the start of my career.”

Sony/ATV Chairman and CEO Jon Platt, added: “Beyond all of her well-deserved accolades and accomplishments, Beyoncé is simply one of the most driven and impactful talents I know.

“I’ve had the privilege of making incredible music with her throughout her career and she continues to set the bar for creative expression in all forms.

“Beyoncé inspires generations with her songs and I am honored to reunite with her at Sony/ATV.”

Beyoncé Signs With Sony/ATV Music Publishing

Klaudia//January 18, 2020
Beyoncé has signed with Sony/ATV Music Publishing, Variety has learned.

Beyoncé and Jay-Z have worked closely for much of their careers with Jon Platt, who took the reins at the Sony Music company as chairman and CEO in 2019.

Platt already brought Rihanna over to his new home last fall, after moving to Sony/ATV from Warner/Chappell earlier in the year.

That the Carters would look to follow Platt at some point was close to a given, considering their mutual words of affection and high praise in the past.

Jay-Z called Platt his “brother” and said he was “the Obama of the music industry” when the publishing exec was the honoree at the annual City of Hope Spirit of Life dinner in October 2018. “This man has worked his way up from a Denver DJ to be the highest-ranking black executive,” he said.

Beyoncé performed at that same event. “I’m so honored to celebrate you tonight,” she said of Platt. “Most people in this industry lead with their ego, but you lead with your heart. You’ve touched so many lives, mine included.”

Beyoncé and Jay-Z send Reese Witherspoon a case of champagne

Klaudia//January 11, 2020
Reese Witherspoon can raise a toast this weekend with some high-end bubbly thanks to Beyoncé, Jay-Z and a little bit of courage.

"I just got home from New York and the most beautiful flowers are here and a case of Ace of Spades champagne," Witherspoon shared on her Instagram Stories. A note with the gift read, "More water from Jay & Bey."

It started with an encounter at last Sunday's Golden Globes ceremony when Witherspoon's table ran out of water. She thought it was only natural to ask the "Drunk in Love" couple for a champagne refill — and her bold move paid off.

The couple surprised the actress with a case of Armand de Brignac "Ace of Spades" champagne. Jay-Z has owned the luxury brand since 2014.

"It's 11:30. We're drinking champagne," Witherspoon said as she popped open a gold bottle with her mom, Betty, who asked whether it was too early to drink.

"Who cares? It's from Jay-Z and Beyoncé," the actress responded.
