Beyoncé tops 2017 BET Awards nominations

Klaudia//May 16, 2017
Beyoncé is the leading nominee for this year’s BET Awards, the network announced Monday morning.

The pop star, who is the most nominated and winning artist in the show’s 17-year-history, scored seven nods for her “Lemonade” — including album of the year.

The ceremony celebrates black excellence in music, film, TV, sports and philanthropy and will air live June 25 from the Microsoft Theater at 8 p.m. Eastern time.

Last year, Beyoncé’s polarizing “Formation” video took one of the night’s biggest honors, video of the year; this year, her bawdy anthem “Sorry” is up against hits from Big Sean, Migos, Bruno Mars and her sister, Solange.

She’s also nominated for collaboration (with two different songs), female R&B/pop artist and video director.

'Lemonade' Highest-Selling Album Globally in 2016

Klaudia//April 26, 2017
Yesterday morning (April 25), the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) released its annual Global Music Report, an analysis of the revenue of the recorded-music business worldwide. The biggest headline: the global music business grew 5.9 percent in 2016 over the previous year, the biggest revenue growth since the IFPI began tracking the market in 1997 and the second-straight year of growth after 15 years of decline.

As part of that report, the IFPI also released a list of the top albums and songs globally for 2016, breaking out albums by sales numbers (digital downloads and physical sales) and tallying songs by track sales (individual track downloads) and track-equivalent streams. And while Drake was the top-selling artist worldwide last year -- he was named the IFPI's Global Recording Artist of the Year back in February, though total sales were not released -- Beyoncé's Lemonade was the highest-selling individual album of 2016 across the globe, according to the federation.

IFPI's February announcement included the list of the top 10 global artists of the year, with David Bowie, Coldplay, Adele and Justin Bieber rounding out the top five in order. Twenty One Pilots, Beyoncé, Rihanna, Prince and The Weeknd, respectively, made up the rest of the top 10.

But yesterday's Global Music Report broke down albums and songs individually, showcasing a few surprises. Check out the list below.

Melina Matsoukas on "Formation" & "Lemonade"

Klaudia//February 27, 2017
Melina Matsoukas, a director of music videos and television shows, had just returned home from a trip to Cuba when she got a call from Beyoncé, asking her to direct a video for a song called “Formation.” Matsoukas had directed nine of Beyoncé’s videos, and considered her “family.” But this assignment was unusually demanding. Beyoncé was working on “Lemonade,” a deeply personal “visual album” that touches on betrayals in black marriages—her parents’ and, reportedly, her own. “Formation” would be the first single, and an introduction to Beyoncé’s new aesthetic: both vulnerable and political. She wanted to release the song the day before she performed it at the Super Bowl, which meant that Matsoukas would have to submit a video within a few weeks. “It was the fastest delivery I had ever done in my life,” she told me.

When I visited her loft in Hollywood recently, Matsoukas opened her rose-gold laptop and pulled up the video. The brassy opening beats began as Beyoncé crouched on the roof of a police car, wearing a red-and-white blouse and a matching skirt: evocative of the rural South but made by Gucci. Matsoukas, who is tall and thin, with dark hair and high cheekbones, radiates a disconcerting hyperassurance. (She’s a Buddhist, with a fluctuating practice.) She is, as she says, “very loud and New York,” but her apartment projects an almost hermetic cool: Africanist art, a golden skull on a shelf, a tar-splashed vanity mirror.

After Matsoukas agreed to direct the video, Beyoncé invited her to her house in Los Angeles, and explained the concept behind “Lemonade.” “She wanted to show the historical impact of slavery on black love, and what it has done to the black family,” Matsoukas told me. “And black men and women—how we’re almost socialized not to be together.” This was a fraught subject for Beyoncé. She and her husband, the rapper Jay Z, are among the most famous couples in the world, and they had long been surrounded by rumors that he was unfaithful. Beyoncé considers herself a feminist, but for black women feminism can be a tenuous balancing act—advocating for women’s rights while supporting black men against racism. Black feminists have often been forced to pick between being politically black or politically female. “It’s an unfair struggle that only black women can understand and relate to,” Matsoukas said. With the “Lemonade” album, Beyoncé was publicly calling out the men in her life, an unexpected and, to her fans, thrilling decision.

Beyoncé Sales Surge After Grammys

Beyoncé’s fans responded with strong support on social media and more sales for her Lemonade album, which was up 267% on Sunday over its Friday/ Saturday average. “Formation,” nominated as both Song and Record of the year, grew by 105%. She also sung “Love Drought” (up by 1,249%) and “Sandcastles” (up 1,000%).
